It’s those types of reviews that have celebrities and theatergoers coming in masses to the Great White Way to see the revival of “The Color Purple” at New York’s Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre.
The much-hyped Broadway musical — produced by Scott Sanders, Oprah Winfrey and others — stars breakout British actress Cynthia Erivo (Celie), Oscar and Grammy winner Jennifer Hudson (Shug Avery), “Orange is the New Black” star Danielle Brooks (Sophia). The principal cast also features Isaiah Johnson as Mister, Joaquina Kalukango as Nettie and Kyle Scatliffe as Harpo.

John Doyle’s new production, imported from the critically-acclaimed Menier Chocolate Factory staging in London, is a reworking of the original Broadway show. This stripped down revival still features music and lyrics by Brenda Russell, Allee Willis, and Stephen Bray.
Adapted from the novel of the same name by Alice Walker and featuring a Broadway script by Marsha Norman, the show has made more than $7 million since previews began on Nov. 10, 2015 and opening night on Dec. 10, 2015.
A new cast album for “The Color Purple” will be released on February 12 via Broadway Records.
