Gospel powerhouse Lecresia Campbell is recuperating at a rehabilitation hospital after surviving a stroke.
Best known for hits like “Perfect Praise (How Excellent),” “Even Me,” and “Safety,” Campbell suffered her stroke in early August and her initial prognosis from doctors was pretty grim.
“I’m a miracle,” the singer told AlwaysAList.com, while recovering at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta. “Despite everything the doctors said, I’m still here and they can’t believe the way I’m progressing.”
Campbell had relocated to Atlanta this summer to become the Worship Leader at Pastor Angelic Simmons’ New Citadel Of Hope Christian Church. She was in Atlanta when she had the stroke.
While she’s been going through recovery, the Stellar Award nominee – who Dr. Bobby Jones has publicly declared is his “favorite vocalist” – said she’s grateful for the love and support the Gospel community, church leaders, friends and fans have shown her.

“They tell me Erica Campbell prayed down heaven on the radio. I appreciate her for that! But I am grateful for all of the calls, cards and expressions of love from so many of my peers, the industry, family and friends. The outpouring of love and kindness has overwhelmed me,” shared Campbell.
Doctors plan to release Campbell at the end of this month and she’ll continue her journey towards total healing at home. Though she’s vowed to take things slow, the 52-year-old vocalist is eager to get back to singing.
Blending soulful Gospel and her classical training, Campbell rose to stardom with her unique approach to sacred sounds that Gospel enthusiasts call “gospera.”
A sought-after psalmist known for her show-stopping guest features, Campbell has recorded with the likes of the Mississippi Mass Choir, Wilmington Chester Mass Choir, Walt Whitman and the Soul Children of Chicago, J.J. Hairston & Youthful Praise, GMWA Mass Choir, Pastor Brenda Jefferson and others. She was also included on the soundtrack for David E. Talbert’s touring musical “His Woman, His Wife,” on the pivotal ballot “Rediscover Yourself.”
