I hadn’t driven a Mazda in several years – 2013 to be exact. But when I needed to take a road trip to Chesapeake, Virginia for a friend’s house warming, Mazda set me up in their 2016 Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring.
From the time this beautiful red crossover SUV was dropped off to me, I was impressed by its sleek design and build. It offered the space I needed to be comfortable on a three-hour road trip, and I soon learned that its multiple drive options, secure ride and great fuel economy were things that really impressed me about CX-5 as well.
There was one aspect of the CX-5 that immediately alarmed me and was probably the thing I disliked about the vehicle the most: the Mazda Connect Infotainment System5 has a security function that freezes the screen as so as the car is in motion. That means, not even a passenger can adjust navigation, change the radio or other functions offered in an over-thought security function. (There are a bunch of rogue videos online about how to disable it, but Mazda should offer an option to the security for “passenger mode” to make adjustments.)
But beyond that, I enjoyed the offerings of the CX-5. It really became the ideal companion for this southern excursion through Virginia. It was sturdy on the road, as I drove down Interstate 95 and moved through the two-lane highway Interstate 64. And even with the hum of the road, the design of the car didn’t allow for a lot of outside noise. It made chatting on the phone feasible (hands free of course) and made listening to my music better, but even with a Bose sound system the audio system in the car was average – not exceptional.
Though I drove the Grand Touring edition of the CX-5, the vehicle also comes in the Sport and Touring trims as well. All trim levels offer a choice of front-wheel drive (FWD) or all-wheel drive (AWD).
All of the 2016 Mazda CX-5 has antilock brakes as a standard, with stability and traction control, front side airbags and side curtain airbags. The car also has an automatic crash notification feature, in addition to a blind spot and rear cross-traffic warning systems.
The interior decor was tastefully done and consists of quality materials. (Check out our Inside Look video for additional details) But the spacious interior and execution of the interior was comfortable and adequate for three hours of travel; running errands in my own city and just driving about.
Spin Control: With price range from $27,000 to $31,000, the Mazda CX-5 offers a quality vehicle for a great price.
