Sheryl Lee Ralph: Actress Talks Playing Jennifer Hudson’s Mother On “Smash”
Actress Sheryl Lee Ralph is currently guest starring on the second season of NBC’s Broadway drama, “Smash.”
Ralph plays a character named Cynthia – mother of Jennifer Hudson’s character Veronica Moore – on the musical-based drama.
“I am thrilled to be working on ‘Smash,’ and in particular, with the fabulous diva Jennifer Hudson,” the actress told AlwaysAList.com.
It was announced last summer that Hudson had signed on for a multi-episode arc on “Smash.”
Ralph—popular for starring on the sitcom “Moesha” as Brandy’s stepmother Dee Mitchell—originated the role of Deena Jones in the Broadway musical “Dreamgirls.” The role landed her a Tony Award nomination.
In 2007, Hudson won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for playing Effie White in the film adaptation of “Dreamgirls.”
“Whoever thought that two ‘Dreamgirls’ would unite as mother and daughter on TV? Dreams do come true!” said Ralph.
