This once overweight kid with poor vision, asthma and a 0.6 grade point average had dreams of playing in the NFL despite his many obstacles. And though life’s adversities seemed like his goal was unattainable, his hard work and determination caused him to cut through and ultimately he became record-setting athlete who has played with the New York Giants, the Oakland Raiders and the Jacksonville Jaguars. Bose SoundLink Micro Waterproof Bluetooth Speaker: With everyone running music and audio from their smart phones, laptops, iPads and other devices; a great mobile speaker is essential for getting optimal sound. What’s even better is when that speaker is small in size and easy to travel with. Bose SoundLink Micro is a pocket-sized Bluetooth speaker that is able to play louder and produce richer and louder sound than most of the competing wireless speakers the same size. In addition to playing music, the speaker has a built-in microphone for speakerphone calls. The Bose SoundLink Micro is waterproof and also has an integrated strap for attaching the speaker onto a bag or clipping it to other objects. Battery life is average so hold on to your plug. Joan Rivers: “Joan Rivers Confidential: The Unseen Scrapbooks, Joke Cards, Personal Files, and Photos of a Very Funny Woman Who Kept Everything” – Hollywood icon Joan Rivers died in September 2014 after a long, accomplished career. A comic legend, Rivers was no typical 81-year-old when she passed. She still worked regularly and with her affinity for plastic surgery, she had the face of at least a 55-year-old. Her only child, Melissa Rivers has assembled a book of her late mom’s mementos and personal artifacts from her 50-years in show business. You’ll find scripts and monologues, letters from famous friends, exchanges with fans, rare photographs, as well as classic and never-before-heard jokes—many simply scribbled on everything from hotel stationery to airplane boarding passes—all in this amazing book. (Harry N. Abrams – $40)

DooDooJuice: Tired of air sprays that don’t cancel out bad smells in the bathroom? Well, there’s a new quick spray smell canceling product available appropriately named DooDooJuice. This natural blend of essential oils is an odor neutralizer that prevents the worst toilet smells before they even emerge. It’s especially effective for shared restrooms, office bathrooms and if you must, the public restroom at some random venue or restaurant. In addition to keeping your bathroom experiences more pleasant, this product is donating $0.50 from each bottle sold to a community charity. (Single $8.99/Trio $22.99)

Serendipity Skin Care: Serenade Repairing Night Cream – I go through moisturizer like I go through underwear. I find one, then my skin gets used to it and it becomes less effective. But can I tell you that I really like this Serendipity Skin Care Serenade Repairing Night Cream. Even though most dermatologists tell you that you don’t need to use moisturizer in the summer, my skin gets dry on airplanes, sleeping in hotels and with the air conditioner running. And because I shave. But this product is supple, goes on smooth and hydrated my skin without filling heavy or opening my pores and making me sweat. It has organic ingredients and really left my skin feeling refreshed. It’s pricey, but worth it. I highly suggest it. ($75.00)

Essence Magazine: It’s a publishing staple for African American women and the men who love them and it’s been around since 1970. In 2000, the magazine’s founders, Clarence Smith and Ed Lewis, sold a 49-percent stake in Essence to Time Inc and then Time purchased the remaining 51 percent in 2005. But now, after nearly two decades, 48-year-old monthly lifestyle magazine is solely Black-owned again. Essence was bought by Richelieu Dennis, the founder of Sundial Brands, a large personal-care products company, from Time Inc. in an all-cash transaction worth about $2.8 billion. Essence will keep its current executive team, which consists entirely of black women, including Michelle Ebanks, the magazine’s president. So it’s a good time to get a current subscription to Essence. Let’s support them! (Single $3.99/Annually $11)

Snoop Dogg: “The Bible of Love” – In the Bible, Psalm 150:6 says, “Let everything that has breath praise the LORD. Praise the LORD.” Well, hip-hop icon Snoop Dogg is in line with the scriptures and decided to showcase his faith on his new multi-disc Gospel debut, “The Bible of Love.” And this isn’t Jesus rapping over West Coast beats! No, Snoop Dogg is serious about his sacred sounds and has assembled an all-star roster of Gospel luminaries like The Clark Sisters, Rance Allen, Marvin Sapp, Mary Mary, Isaac Carree, Kim Burrell, Fred Hammond and John P. Kee for an album that’s more traditional than anything you’ve heard in recent year. These are Sunday Morning songs—and of course some contemporary stuff too—but this just may be the most authentic Gospel album that Gospel music has seen in at least five years. And as a bonus mainstream music stars like Faith Evans, Charlie Wilson, Patti LaBelle, B. Slade, Daz Dillinger and Jazze Pha also appear. You get 32 tracks and the album is 134:01 minutes long. (RCA Inspiration, 13.99)
