Affordable Luxury: Why The 2019 Genesis G70 Is Winning Critical Acclaim
True story, I’ve been obsessed with the Genesis brand since 2014. I was first introduced to the automotive brand that’s in the Hyundai family when I tested a sedan in January 2014.
During the week that I had it, I actually drove Phaedra Parks, then cast member of Bravo’s “Real Housewives of Atlanta,” around Washington, D.C. while she was in town for her book signing. Her husband at the time, Apollo Nida, was a car lover and was fascinated by the affordable luxury offered by the vehicle.
I recently tested the 2019 Genesis G70 3.3T Design Edition, just named the 2019 North American Car of the Year during the North American International Auto Show in Detroit.
This sleek, stylish sedan was really impressive to me. Trust me, this vehicle is special. For $49,745 — the price of the model I tested — you’re getting a high-end vehicle comparable to what its competitors like BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Audi are offering.
The cabin in comfortable and the seat has nearly every adjustment other than laying out flat like an airline reclining seat. I made a trip out to Waldorf, Maryland for a first time visit to my friend Tudi’s new home. She and my other childhood friend Tauheedah joined me for a quick ride to Cracker Barrel and both were raving about how surprisingly posh the G70 was, especially for its list price.
The car boasts a 365-hp twin-turbocharged 3.3-liter V6 engine that reportedly shoots the sedan to 60 miles per hour in a mere 4.5 seconds. And the engine felt lag-free. This car is fast and packs a punch for sure!
And even with all of its luxury, this is a proper sports sedan. I loved putting this car in the sports drive and dashing down Interstate 495.
For safety, the G70 has the forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, automatic high-beam headlights, and a blind-spot monitoring system with rear-cross-traffic alert.
Truth is, I loved the Genesis G70. But overall, Genesis may be the best kept secret in the automotive business. If they could expand their marketing and brand visibility, they’ll become a true automotive consumer favorite.
