Lauryn Hill Tells Oprah Winfrey: No Thanks
This year alone she’s interviewed Rihanna, The Kardashians, Whitney Houston’s daughter Bobbi Kristina, 50 Cent, Michael Jackson’s daughter Paris Jackson and an all-star group of Olympic gold medalists, but the one person not interested in sitting down for an episode of Oprah Winfrey’s “Next Chapter” is apparently Lauryn Hill.
Winfrey revealed during a Twitter chat about “Next Chapter” on her OWN Network that despite reaching out to the troubled former member of The Fugees, Hill — or Ms. Hill as she demands you call her — has declined the offer to sit that with the queen of all media.
When a TV viewer sent a tweet to Winfrey suggesting that she book an interview with Hill “asap,” Winfrey replied: “Tried. She said no.”
The 37-year-old singer/rapper recently made headlines for pleading guilty on June 29 to three charges of failing to file federal income tax returns between 2005 and 2007.
In a rambling statement/explanation that was released around the time of her plea, Hill shared her logic for refusing to pay her taxes.
“For the past several years, I have remained what others would consider underground. I did this in order to build a community of people, like-minded in their desire for freedom and the right to pursue their goals and lives without being manipulated and controlled by a media protected military industrial complex with a completely different agenda.”
The Grammy Award winner went on to rant about how she had been exploited as an artist and the victim of an industry “that required distortion and compromise as a means for maintaining it.”
She declared that she freed herself from people she couldn’t trust, and also emphasized that she did not squander her money on a luxury lifestyle.
“There were no exotic trips, no fleet of cars, just an all out war for safety, integrity, wholeness and health, without mistreatment denial, and/or exploitation. In order to liberate myself from those who found it ok to oppose my wholeness, free speech and integral growth by inflicting different forms of punitive action against it, I used my resources to sustain our safety and survival until I was able to restore my ability to earn outside of it,” she continued.

The IRS estimates that the “Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit” star has earned more than $1.6 million in income cumulatively in 2005, 2006 and 2007 and failed to file in each of those years.
If she’s found guilty, Hill could face up to three years in prison and a $300,000 fine. She will be sentenced in November.
Hill is a mother of six children — five with Rohan Marley, son of Reggae legend Bob Marley — son Zion David,15, daughter Selah Louise, 13, son Joshua Omaru, 10, son John Nesta, 9, and daughter Sarah, 4. Last July she gave birth to her sixth child, a son named Micah, but the father of the child is unknown.
