A-List Rides: Space-Age Spinning in Cadillac’s CTS
I’ve consistently said for the last two years that the new slogan for Cadillac should be: “This aint your father’s Cadillac anymore!”
Cadillac is a brand that has deep history in the United States, particularly in the African-American community. For years it was a status symbol that meant: “You made it!” It’s iconic for being the vehicle most preachers and people of faith flocked to as automobile of choice. Cadillac just resonates with our community in a major way.
Each time I test drive a Cadillac I think about that history. Like our history, Cadillac too has evolved and the modern models of this staple brand truly capture the balance of classic appeal and modern luxury. I spent some time recently in the 2012 Cadillac CTS Coupe Premium Collection and let’s just say, it was seven days in power-packed heaven.
I approached the CTS and thought: “How do I get in this car?” With touchable push button door releases that are a nod to the cartoon “The Jetsons,” the car has no handles to take away from the sharp shooting lines that line the mobile beauty.
Backing up all that style is a powerful 3.6-liter V6 engine that spits out 318-horse power. The mileage was pretty impressive at 18/27 city and highway respectively, which helped me a lot with the current gas prices (above $4.00 at time of this test drive). The V6 engine offers enough adrenaline induced smiles whether whipping around the city or blazing down the highway. The CTS is a meaty vehicle and in addition to packing a punch, it felt heavier than similar coupes by other manufacturers in its class. Yet, this whip handles smoothly, took corners well and remains, light on its feet, so to speak!
The CTS has dual-stage driver front air bag, segment-first dual depth front passenger air bag, driver and front passenger side seat-mounted pelvic/thorax side air bags, roof-rail side curtain air bags that cover front and rear seating rows, front safety belt pretensioners, tire pressure monitoring system, body structure with strategically placed high-strength steel and GM’s OnStar 9.0, which now offers Flexible Speech Recognition, as well as signature OnStar services such as Automatic Crash Response and Turn-by-Turn Navigation. That pretty much covered safety!
The inside of the CTS was like getting into “The Jetsons'” spaceship cockpit. The futuristic design featured light titanium interior with ebony and Sapele wood trim accents. The car has integrated iPod/MP3 capability, 40-gig hard drive, including the ability to store music and pause-and-replay live radio and a Pop-up navigation system. It also has an adaptive forward lighting system, Bluetooth connectivity, Standard Keyless Access and Smart Remote Start, Rear vision camera system and Bose 5.1 Cabin Surround™ audio system rounded out the bling factor of the CTS. One of the best features overall — it has an Automatic Cabin Odor Filter.
Spin Control: For the $54,920 price tag listed on my 2012 CTS Coupe Premium Collection, you’re getting your money’s worth and more. This car makes you proud to drive an American-made vehicle!
