R. Kelly: Readying “Trapped In The Closet” For Broadway

R&B veteran R. Kelly is developing his “Trapped in the Closet” hip-hop opera parody for the Great White Way.

While in New York City to promote the latest installment of his “Trapped” series premiering on the IFC channel on Friday, Kelly revealed that he has received an offer to bring the musical to Broadway.

“To transform it into a Broadway version, that’s what I’m working on,” he told a packed house at the Sunshine Theater, where the screening took place.

The Chicago-bred crooner didn’t divulge any additional details, but did disclose that he would consider appearing in the production.

“Trapped in the Closet” made its debut in 2005 and currently consists of 23 chapters.

The 45-year-old musician confessed that “Trapped” was born out of his “silly” sensed of humor.

“I’m just having a lot of fun. I don’t have a job, so I sit in the studio all day and think of stuff to do and this is just something stupid I’ve done that’s been successful for me,” he said. “I’m having a lot of fun with it.”

The latest chapters of “Trapped” introduce several new faces and ends with a cliffhanger.

It’s been five years since Kelly introduced new chapters of his musical, but he vowed not to take as long for the next installments.

“I want everybody to know I’ve got 85 chapters of ‘Trapped in the Closet’ waiting in the studio for y’all,” he said. “The chapters that are coming — the show, we call it — is going to exceed every chapter that you have ever seen.”
