Joy Behar: Comedienne Leaving “The View”
Comedienne Joy Behar is leaving ABC’s “The View.”
The 70-year-old funny woman is departing the popular daytime talk show after more than 16 years.
In a story first reported by Deadline.com, Behar confirmed to the entertainment site that “it seemed like the right time” to explore other options.
“You reach a point when you say to yourself, ‘Do I want to keep doing this?’ There are other things on my plate I want to do — I’ve been writing a play, I’ve been neglecting my standup,” she explained.
Behar is the last original cast member of The View besides co-creator/executive producer Barbara Walters. When “The View” premiered in 1997, the original cast included Behar, Walters, Star Jones, Meredith Vieira, and Debbie Matenopoulos. Behar was originally slated to be a part-time co-host, but producers loved her so much that they put her on every day.
Behar hosted her own show, “The Joy Behar Show” for CNN’s sister channel HLN from 2009 to 2011. That show was canceled.
She currently hosts a new solo series, “Joy Behar: Say Anything!” on Al Gore’s Current TV, but that show is slated to end now that Al Jazeera has purchased the network.
There have been rumors that Behar will be joining the new roster at CNN under Jeff Zucker’s reign. Though the comic did admit she had “a positive meeting” with Zucker and “CNN would be great place” for her next show, she wouldn’t elaborate further.
As far as “The View” is concerned, Behar said: “I have a lot of friends there, and I will miss everyone I’ve worked with because we have a family there.”
Behar said she’s grateful that Walters tapped her to be on the series. “It is a smart talk show because somebody of her stature is leading the conversation; Barbara was one of the main reasons I took that job,” Behar said.
ABC released a statement following Behar’s announcement celebrating her time on the show.
“Joy Behar has been instrumental in the success of The View from the very beginning. We wish her all the best in this next chapter, and are thrilled that we have her for the remainder of the season,” the statement read.
