Sisqó: Dru Hill Member Staging Solo Comeback
Dru Hill singer Sisqó is ready to revisit his solo success.
The ‘Thong Song’ singer, who became a huge pop star with his solo debut, “Unleash the Dragon” in 1999, is hoping his long-delayed “Return of the Dragon” can return him to pop glory.
“I’ve been working on the album for a minute but the timing just wasn’t right to come out. Last year was the year of the dragon. That would have been perfect but it still wasn’t the right time. There was too much going on for when we were trying to drop. In the music industry you have to catch the right quarter. It’s like double dutch,” Sisqó said in an interview with Soul Culture.
Sisqó’s solo career stalled after the release of his 2002 sophomore effort, “Return of the Dragon.” The album suffered from lackluster sales after none of the CD’s single’s generated the fanfare of pop single, ‘Thong Song’ and R&B ballad, ‘Incomplete.’
The 34-year-old singer also had a public feud with R&B star Usher, who released his CD, “8701” around the same time as Sisqó’s “Return of the Dragon.” Usher’s junior CD completely overshadowed Sisqó’s sophomore release and in an interview with yours truly, Usher referred to himself as “the dragon slayer.”
But now, Sisqó is ready to give solo singing another go and is gearing up to release a new single.
“A lot of the time people say my music is ahead of its time. My album is compiled of a lot of music that I started working on three years ago and it’s relevant now. The whole techno thing – I started experimenting with that three years ago. It wasn’t even really that mainstream popular. Now everybody’s doing it,” explained Sisqó.
The Baltimore-bred entertainer has been recording new solo music for the last three years.
In addition to his forthcoming solo situation, Sisqó continues to perform shows with his group Dru Hill. The quartet – who just recently wrapped a tour with Guy, SWV, Al B. Sure and Tony Toni Tone – has upcoming shows in Wallingford, Conn. and their hometown, Baltimore.
