Iyanla Vanzant: Debut With DMX Equals Ratings Success

Oprah Winfrey’s OWN Network continues to have ratings success with its newer programming.

Ratings for the second season premiere of “Iyanla: Fix My Life” were stellar for OWN, actually up 22% overall from its series debut last fall.

Iyanla Vanzant’s self-help series premiered as a 90-minute special that showed the life coach attempting to help hip-hop star DMX.

Vanzant’s attempts to help the trouble-prone rapper come to terms with his drug and alcohol addiction, as well as heal his relationship with his son, Xavier Simmons, caused DMX to exhibit extremely erratic and combustible behavior. DMX’s contentious show appearance helped the debut draw 1.8 million total viewers.

The episode has generated some controversy since its premiere, with viewers being shocked and dismayed by DMX’s volatile behavior and disrespect of Vanzant.

The rapper has been doing some press interviews offering a rebuttal to what was seen on television, but his son has been very vocal that his father’s perspective is completely misguided.

“DMX loves to play the victim. He thought the show was going to be about him. Iyanla didn’t make his life worse, he made it worse,” Xavier said in a recent interview.

Xavier also posted several Twitter messages about the show after its airing.

“Iyanla: Fix My Life” was the lead-in to the debut of “Life with La Toya” starring La Toya Jackson. That 30-minute reality show also had strong ratings, earning 1.5 million total viewers for the night.

The strong ratings performance made OWN’s Saturday prime-time lineup rank number one across all broadcast and cable in key African-American demographics.

In addition, OWN was the number one social network in prime-time (non-sports) on Saturday in all of TV according to Bluefin.
