Renewed: OWN Orders More From Iyanla Vanzant, La Toya Jackson & Kym Whitley
Tyler Perry’s two scripted series on Oprah Winfrey’s OWN Network are not the channels only hits.
OWN’s two reality series, “Raising Whitley,” starring comedienne Kym Whitley, and “Life With La Toya,” about La Toya Jackson, have officially received second season orders from the network. Their second seasons will air in 2014.
The show’s self-help series, “Iyanla: Fix My Life” will also be back for more. Iyanla Vanzant will actually return for a third season this summer, airing six new episodes starting July 20.
All three series aired on Saturday nights and helped make OWN the number one most-watched network with African-Americans on weekends. The network presidents celebrated the success of these three shows in a statement.
“These series have been instrumental in our efforts to build a lineup of programs that appeal to viewers across multiple genres,” added OWN president Sheri Salata. “The new episodes will continue to deliver insight, laughter, inspiration and entertainment for our expanding audience.”
“We have seen tremendous ratings growth this year and much of that success is attributed to the performance of our Saturday night series,” said OWN president Erik Logan. “Our audience has truly embraced these shows and the stories told every week.”
Several new reports indicate the recent success of OWN with African-American viewers has the network topping the viewership of Black Entertainment Television (BET), though OWN was not set out to be the third Black cable channel (remember, there’s also TV One).
