India.Arie: Addresses Skin-Lightening Drama
Soul singer India.Arie has broken her silence regarding the backlash she received from fans who suspected she lightened her skin for the image of her latest radio single, “Cocoa Butter.”
On Arie’s biggest hit song, ‘Video,’ she sang: “When I look in the mirror and the only one there is me/Every freckle on my face is where it’s suppose to be/And I know my creator didn’t make no mistakes on me/My feet, my thighs, my Lips, my eyes, I’m loving what I see.”
Fans were alarmed by how light she was on the photo for her latest single and took to the internet to sound off about how the earthy entertainer was trying to conform.
But during an appearance on Oprah Winfrey’s “Super Soul Sunday” on the OWN Network, the 37-year-old singer said she wasn’t trying to alter her skin tone, but was attempting to be artistic.
“That was my intention,” she explained to Winfrey. “What I wanted was to have gold skin. If you see, the dress is gold fabric and its metallic fabric in the backdrop. I wanted for it to glow, and be luminous. Not light, just luminous.”
The Denver-bred diva said she understood why fans would be alarmed by the misimpression of what happened, but she never stressed about the fallout. Ultimately, she wanted to show a different version of herself on the cover that was sexy and feminine and glowing.
“There’s that conversation where women’s bodies are just unpacked as entertainment. There’s bikini body and post-baby body; mom boobs and all the stuff that they say and all that stuff. For me, it was stepping out there and allowing myself to be beautiful and sensual and powerful and strong and athletic and womanly and this stuff and letting it be seen. Showing some skin, showing some thigh muscles — that was my intention,” she offered.
