D.L. Hughley: Readying Return To Radio
Last week, AlwaysAList.com reported that “The Talk” co-host Sheryl Underwood was launching a new afternoon radio starting Aug. 2.
Now, AlwaysAList.com can report that D.L. Hughley is the latest comedian to enter the afternoon radio game.
One of “The Original Kings of Comedy,” Hughley is no stranger to radio having hosted “The D.L. Hughley Morning Show” on the now-defunct 98.7 Kiss FM in New York City.
The 50-year-old funnyman is slated to host an afternoon drive show that will be syndicated by Reach Media (formerly Syndication One). The show is rumored to replace Reach Media’s struggling “Skip Murphy in the Afternoon Show.” The latter show was launched to fill the void left when the “The Michael Baisden Show” ended in March after Michael Baisden and his syndicator, Cumulus Media, could not come to terms on a new contract.
Specifics about Hughley’s new afternoon show are still being hammered out, however there’s buzz that both news anchor Jacque Reid – who co-hosted with the comic on his New York morning show, and veteran radio personality DeDe McGuire – who currently hosts “DeDe in The Morning” on K104 FM in Dallas, are both being considered to co-host with Hughley. McGuire also does double duty on the syndicated afternoon show, “The Doug Banks Show,” but she’s apparently not currently under contract with that show.
Sources told AlwaysAList.com that the targeted launch of Hughley’s new show was “mid to late August,” but that the date could be pushed back because “contracts were not finalized yet.” Hughley is in Dallas this week meeting with Reach executives.
Apparently, Reach Media wants Hughley to relocate to Dallas to anchor his afternoon show, but the former “Dancing with the Stars” contestant wants to do the show from either Los Angeles or New York.
AlwaysAList.com contacted Reach Media for comment on this story, but at press time had not received a response.
