Sherman Hemsley: Dead at 74

“The Jeffersons” star Sherman Hemsley has died!  The 74-year-old actor died at this home in El Paso, Texas confirmed authorities in the city.

In addition to his most famous role as George Jefferson, Hemsley also played Deacon Ernest Frye on the hit sitcom “Amen” and went on to guest star on a shows like “The Hughleys,” “Martin,” “Sister, Sister,” “Clueless” and others.

In 1989 Hemsley released a single called, “Ain’t that A Kick in the Head.” In recent years, he was a popular fixture on the touring play circuit.

The Philadelphia-bred star had no wife and no kids.

UPDATE: The medical examiner had confirmed that Hemsley died of natural causes.  He will not undergo an autopsy.

The actor had apparently been ill, however details of his sickness were not disclosed.
