Miss Robbie Montgomery is the matriarch of the family business and OWN reality series “Welcome to Sweetie Pies,” and while she’s best known for serving up soul food, now Miss Robbie is featured on a new original line dance song called ‘Do the Sweetie Pie.’ The song and the accompanying music video was written by Miss Robbie’s son, Tim Norman.
Miss Robbie is a former backup singer for Ike & Tina Turner. The 73-year-old businesswoman had to end her career as an Ikette in the 1960’s because of a health issue and opened up her successful soul food business in St. Louis.
“It was my first time recording in Lord knows how many years,” said Miss Robbie. “After my lung collapsed, doctors told me I’d never be able to record again, but you never know what God has in store for you and you’re never too old to try. When my son Tim wrote the song for me I thought it would be a fun thing to do together-don’t just chase your dreams, catch them.”
Miss Robbie likes to dance with her friends on the weekend, so her son thought being able to record would be the ideal gift for his mom.
“It started out as a birthday gift for my mother,” explained Norman. “Even though she sang for years, she didn’t have a song of her own and I wanted to do something special for her that we could create together-something she would really remember.”
They hope the ‘Do the Sweetie Pie’ will eventually become a popular party anthem like other line dance songs like ‘The Electric Slide,’ ‘The Wobble’ and ‘The Cupid Shuffle.’
“Welcome to Sweetie Pies” airs on Saturday nights at 9pm ET on Oprah Winfrey’s OWN Network.
