Big Box Office: “12 Years A Slave” Opens Huge In Limited Release
Fox Searchlight’s critically acclaimed film “12 Years A Slave” had a huge first weekend at the box office this past weekend in limited release.
The film, which stars Chiwetel Ejiofor as Solomon Northup as a free black man from upstate New York who is abducted and sold into slavery, opened in limited release in 19 theaters. The movie grossed more than $960,000, an outstanding $50,525 per theater screen.
According to Fox Searchlight, research polls for the film show it reached an “incredibly diverse audience.” The film has been “attracting both the Art/Specialty cinephile crowd as well the African-American audience. CinemaScores have come in with an overall grade of ‘A’ with a fairly wide spread in terms of age and demographics.”
Fox Searchlight will expand the theater count for “12 Years A Slave” more each weekend, and by Thanksgiving the movie will be in wide release.
The film has been audience favorites at the Telluride, Toronto and New York Film Festivals.
