Full Coverage: Vanity Fair Gets Diverse For Hollywood Issue

In 2010, I wrote an open letter in my former column at AOL Black Voices to Vanity Fair harshly criticizing them for their lack of diversity.

At the time, the famed glossy had unveiled its 16th annual Vanity Fair Hollywood Issue and completely overlooked any actresses of color on its all-female cover story.

At the time, both Zoe Saldana (“Avatar”) and Gabourey Sidibe (“Precious”) were red-hot because of their respective roles and many folks, including myself, argued that they definitely should have been included.

This year, Vanity Fair seems to have gotten the Hollywood diversity memo and have included five actors of color on its unisex cover story featuring 12 of Tinseltown’s finest.

For its 20th annual Vanity Fair Hollywood Issue, the magazine celebrates the unprecedented diverse year in film that 2013 offered and the distinguished actors who fronted those films.

The three-panel cover feature photographed by the acclaimed Annie Leibovitz, features Oscar nominees Julia Roberts (“August: Osage County”), Chiwetel Ejiofor (“12 Years a Slave“), Jared Leto (“Dallas Buyers Club”), and Lupita Nyong’o (“12 Years a Slave”); as well as Idris Elba (“Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom”), George Clooney (“Gravity”), Michael B. Jordan (“Fruitvale Station”), Naomie Harris (“Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom”), Brie Larson (“Short Term 12”), Chadwick Boseman (“42”), Margot Robbie (“The Wolf of Wall Street”), and Léa Seydoux (“Blue Is the Warmest Color”).

Kudos to Vanity Fair for showcasing the full spectrum of actors working in Hollywood and be sure to check out their 20th annual Vanity Fair Hollywood Issue.
