Diva Delight: Patti LaBelle, Gladys Knight & Natalie Cole To Join “After Midnight”
On the heels of garnering seven Tony Award nominations, including Best Musical, the hit Broadway show “After Midnight” has announced three music veterans will join the impressive roster of all-star entertainers who have been featured in the musical.
LaBelle, who has previously starred in the Broadway shows “Your Arms Too Short to Box with God” and “Fela,” will headline “After Midnight” from June 10-29.
Knight, who previously starred in Broadway’s “Smokey Joe’s Cafe,” will follow LaBelle from July 8-Aug. 3.
This will be Cole’s debut on the Great White Way when she takes over from Aug. 5-31.
“After Midnight” celebrates Duke Ellington’s years at the Cotton Club nightclub in the 1930′s in Harlem.
“American Idol” winner Fantasia Barrino originated the role in the production, and k.d. lang, Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds and Toni Braxton have starred since. Eleven-time Grammy nominee Vanessa L. Williams is currently starring in the production.
Produced by Scott Sanders and Wynton Marsalis, the show stars actor Dulé Hill – who threads the show together with excerpts of poetry by Langston Hughes – and features a 17-piece Jazz at Lincoln Center All Stars orchestra.
The show plays Tuesday through Sundays at New York’s Brooks Atkinson Theatre.
