Major Movie: Mo’Nique Books Part In Bessie Smith Film
Oscar winner Mo’Nique has finally landed a part in a major Hollywood film.
The former star of “The Parkers” role in the HBO movie about the iconic blues singer is her first big acting role since winning her Academy Award in 2009 for her part in “Precious.”

During the 2008-2009 award show season, the Baltimore-bred comedienne was branded “difficult” and “ungracious” by Hollywood executives for the manner in which she handled her recognition. Additionally, Mo’Nique wanted to receive appearance fees for promoting the film that she was nominated for – a practice that is never done, as an actor promoting their work is considered an extension of their job responsibilities.
To make matters worst, most felt Mo’Nique’s Oscar speech for her Best Supporting Actress win was defiant and showed a lack of appreciation for the prestigious Hollywood honor.
Nearly five years after the success of “Precious,” it was announced in January that Mo’Nique has landed roles in two independent films, “Blackbird” and “We Are Family.” Ironically, she stars opposite former “Grey’s Anatomy” star Isaiah Washington in both features.
Most were shocked to learn back in December that the once hot-like-fire talent would be the first Oscar winner to host a reality show reunion special for the series “Love & Hip Hop.”
Last fall, it was announced that the 46-year-old talent had a talk show pilot in development. Ultimately, that show did not get picked up.
