Ruby Dee: Famed Actress Dead At 91
Legendary stage, TV and film actress Rudy Dee has died at age 91.
The SAG Award-winning actress died from natural causes at her home in New Rochelle, NY surrounded by her family.
A civil rights activist and pioneer for African-American equality in Hollywood, Dee and her late husband Ossie Davis were recipients of the National Medal of Arts and Kennedy Center Honors.
In 2008, Dee was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role for her work in “American Gangster.”
The Cleveland-bred thespian is best known for her roles ranging from “A Raisin in the Sun” and “Purlie Victorious,” to Spike Lee’s “Do the Right Thing” and “Jungle Fever.”
