I had been trying to get into the Chevrolet Camaro since spring and by the time the agency that schedules the vehicles finally put me in one, let’s just say it was already Daylight savings time and they booked me for the convertible.
Well, lucky me. I spent seven days in the 2014 Chevrolet Camaro SS Convertible and Mother Nature was nice enough to give me two days with weather nice enough to drop the top.
The car is eye-candy! Its a head-turner both because of its commanding aesthetic and its booming engine hum. For the 2014 model, the redesigned front fascia is more angular and flows upward. The change makes the Camaro appear wider and lower.
This is a real American muscle car, powered by a 323-horsepower direct-injected 3.6-liter V6 with a six-speed manual transmission (the automatic is available as well). The SS’s 6.2-liter V8 generates 426 horsepower with the standard six-speed manual, and 400 horsepower with the optional six-speed automatic with sequential shift control. The supercharged 6.2-liter engine is rated at 580 horsepower and 556 lb.-ft. of torque.
The powerful car soars on the highway, accelerating quickly as you shift gears. Its easy to maneuver, transitioning into lanes and easy functioning in city traffic without any hassle at all. The ZR1’s standard magnetic fluid-filled shock absorbers react instantly to road conditions and driver inputs. Also, the Performance Traction Management, its launch control feature in the manual transmission only, automatically modulates engine torque for the best-possible acceleration without excessive wheel spin.
Like most Camaros, the standard offerings includes independent rear suspension, StabiliTrak stability control with traction control and six airbags. For technology efforts, you have your USB port, Bluetooth wireless connectivity, OnStar and SiriusXM satellite radio. The audio system is by Boston Acoustics sound system, which provides solid sound for the vehicle.
When the top is down, you can hear the air from the outdoor that sometimes makes you wonder if your top is secure. The fabric hood definitely isn’t sound-proof. And closing the top after opening it can be a bit tricky the first few times. Securing the closing handle can at times be complicated and takes a few tries to master.
Fuel economy was only okay to me. Despite being a manual, it landed 14 mpg in the city and 19 mpg on the highway.
Spin Control: At $60,000, this vehicle is an investment car better suited for life in Florida or California. While you can appreciate it in other cities as well, the soft-top isn’t ideal for cold, winter months. This is best suited to be a spring, summer and fall car.
