Urban Inspiration: Dwele Crafting Community-Minded Music

Dwele

Detroit-bred soul star Dwele fell in love with music at an early age and now he’s ready to inspire other young people.

The 36-year-old entertainer (real name: Andwele Gardner) is putting his talent to work for the next generation through a text-to-give initiative developed by the Making It Happen Foundation (MIHF) in support of the HEROES Initiative (Helping Everyone Reach Opportunities and Elevated Sustainability).

The Grammy nominee’s new song ‘Drive The Future’ will help to raise funds for music and arts programs around the country, with a particular emphasis on Dwele’s hometown and the birthplace of the iconic Motown Records.

Dwele told us that while music and arts is thriving in private schools, they are being stripped away in public schools, which he believes is a disservice to students.

“Learning how to read and play music teaches you focus and discipline that helps you succeed in every area of life,” he told AlwaysAList.com. “I was introduced to music in elementary school, and I want to be part of a generation that makes sure all kids are introduced to music at a young age—just like I was.”

The ‘Find A Way’ singer said in a perfect world, he’d like to see students—particularly those in urban classrooms—have regular access to the arts and technology as enhancement tools for their education.

“I would definitely have one class where every kid in class had their own computer and were taught the marriage of music and technology; everyone would have their own individual piece and place where they can work and create,” expressed Dwele. “And I would make sure there was one hour of traditional band class where students were learning how music was made before Pro Tools and FruityLoops so that kids would learn about the art form of music in the truest sense.”

To contribute to Dwele’s initiative, fans can text “DRIVETHEFUTURE” to 41444 to support the campaign and they will receive a download of Dwele’s new single ‘Drive the Future.’ The single is also available for download on iTunes.

Dwele, who released his fifth studio CD “Greater Than One” in 2012, is currently on his 10-year anniversary “Subject” tour. The tour will play dates in London, New York City, Los Angeles, Washington, DC, Oakland, Atlanta, Baltimore and other cities.
