As the 20-year anniversary of the release of the popular romantic comedy “Love Jones” approaches, a stage adaptation of the movie is hitting the road this fall.
“Love Jones: The Musical” will feature music superstars Dave Hollister, Chrisette Michele, Musiq Soulchild, Marsha Ambrosius, MC Lyte, and Raheem DeVaughn in a hybrid concert and theatrical presentation. The night will offer a musical re-telling of a classic story that captured the hearts and minds of an entire generation of filmgoers.
Produced by veteran theater producer Melvin Childs of Produced By Faith with stage play written by Timothy Allen Smith and directed by Zadia Ife, “Love Jones The Musical,” tells the universal and timeless story of love, heartbreak and starting over. The film’s original writer and director, Theodore Witcher, serves as consulting producer.
Originally released on March 14, 1997 by New Line Cinema, the film “Love Jones” starred Larenz Tate, Nia Long, Bill Bellamy, Isaiah Washington and Lisa Nicole Carson.
Its iconic soundtrack featured original music by Dionne Farris (“Hopeless”); Trina Broussard (“Inside My Love”); Xscape (“In the Rain”); Kenny Lattimore (“Can’t Get Enough”); Marcus Miller & Me’shell Ndegeocello (“Rush Over”); Groove Theory (“Never Enough”); Cassandra Wilson (“You Move Me”) and Cassie (“Girl”). The album also featured tracks by Maxwell, Refugee Camp All-Stars, Lauryn Hill, The Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra and Duke Ellington & John Coltrane; as well as poetry by “Love Jones” stars Tate and Long.
“Love Jones: The Musical” will marry elements of the film with the catalog from Hollister, Michele, Soulchild, Ambrosius, Lyte and DeVaughn.

“Love Jones: The Musical” kicks off September 9, 2016 in Oklahoma City, OK and its tour lineup includes confirmed dates in Philadelphia, PA; Norfolk, VA; Baltimore, MD; Chicago, IL: Cleveland, OH; Detroit, MI, Brooklyn, NY, Los Angeles, CA; Memphis, TN; Washington, DC and 19 other cities.
