Sunday after Sunday, Nashville-based vocalist Kyla Jade has been a star attraction on BET’s “Bobby Jones Gospel” as part of Dr. Bobby Jones’ Nashville Super Choir.
Now, Jade is branching out with her first solo endeavor, led by a remake of the Rev. Maceo Woods classic, ‘Hello Sunshine.’
“It is such a classic song with a great message,” Jade told AlwaysAList.com about her deciding to revamp that song. “It is one of those songs you heard as a child and randomly sang into adulthood. I wanted to be a part of the song’s legacy.”
TV viewers have watched this Minister of Music of the Cathedral of Praise COGIC Church in Nashville deliver a variety of musical stylings while singing with Dr. Jones’ choir, everything from traditional gospel songs to jazz-infused numbers.
“I was blessed to have a mother who allowed me to be surrounded by music. I was brought up in a God-fearing household that did everything from washing dishes to homework to music. I started playing classical upright bass in grade school and started collecting classical jazz records around middle school. I grew up in Kansas and sang choral music most of my life at a predominately white school. Once I moved to Nashville to attend Fisk University the opportunities to challenge myself came from every direction,” she explained.
During her time at Fisk, Jade developed a reputation in Music City as “one to watch.” It was that type of local buzz that ultimately landed her in Dr. Jones’ Nashville Super Choir.
“Kyla has been a great support to my ministry and has made a significant contribution to the world through her music, instructions, leadership and voice quality. I am delighted to have her as a part of what I do. Performing before audiences of 500,000 to 1,000,000 means discipline and desire must be at the forefront. She has both,” Dr. Jones said about her talent.
“Singing with NSC under Dr. Jones and Derrick Lee’s direction and leadership is what moved me from a church singer into a performer. I am still learning,” she acknowledged.
‘Hello Sunshine’ is just an introduction of what this 30-year-old vocalist aims to offers musically. With such vast taste in music, Jade wants her forthcoming album to embody the variety of music she’s learned to love.
“My fans know I have been on this journey for a while, and I want my album to show a musical progression of my life. Gospel is telling the good news of Jesus, I will absolutely sing about God’s love and mercy for me -some of the songs will be Sunday morning worship at its finest, and some will be done with a little jazz and soul embellishment,” she concluded.
