Joshua Rogers was crowned the first male winner of season five of BET’s “Sunday Best” this past weekend.
“I’m just so happy,” Rogers told AlwaysAList.com, when he phoned from the finale party on Sunday. “I’m so thankful! I don’t even know what to say.”
The 18-year-year vocalist, who was a favorite of “Sunday Best” judge Donnie McClurkin from the time he first auditioned, beat out another 18-year-old singer, Alexis Spight to win the faith-based competition series.
Winning “Sunday Best” landed Rogers a recording contract with Mathew Knowles’ Music World Gospel label, a cash prize and a 2013 Ford Escape.
Rogers is from the small town of Greeleyville, SC with a population of 375 people.
The town gathered on Sunday night to watch the pre-taped finale on Black Entertainment Television at C.E. Murray High School, where Rogers recently graduated from.
“Sunday Best” is pre-recorded and during the taping of the finale two alternative endings are shot. Though the show’s judges, McClurkin, Yolanda Adams and CeCe Winans determine which contestants move forward each week, the TV viewers actually vote to determine the winner of the finale.
Previous winners of “Sunday Best” include (in order of season) Crystal Aikin, Y’Anna Crawley, Le’Andria Johnson and Amber Bullock.
