The spicy tome left no stone unturned, with juicy stories about LaVette’s fellow singers like Aretha Franklin (who she says was married to a pimp named Ted White who rightfully beat the Queen of Soul); Diana Ross (“a stuck-up bitch with a small voice”), James Brown (“an especially ignorant man”); Stevie Wonder (she tried to help him lose his virginity at 16); and Tina Turner (who she says stayed with Ike Turner because she wanted to learn the lessons his beatings taught.
The 69-year-old former prostitute also reveals that she slept with Otis Redding and Ben E. King.
Now, “A Woman Like Me” has been optioned for a movie by Alicia Keys. A self-proclaimed movie buff, LaVette is overjoyed with anticipation about her story being made into a feature film.
“I’m so excited. I’ve never been involved in anything like that,” she said during an interview on PBS.
No word on when Keys plans to start production on the film or who will star as LaVette.
