The controversial film, that had received backlash from the late singer’s family, stars Alexandra Shipp as the ‘Rock the Boat’ singer.
Neal will play the Empress of Soul in film. Knight was married to Aaliyah’s uncle and manager, Barry Hankerson, who will be portrayed in the film by Eugene Byrd (“True Blood”/”Bones”). Aaliyah actually performed with Knight during a Las Vegas stint when the singer was 11-years-old.
In addition to her role in “Aaliyah: Princess of R&B,” Neal will star in the upcoming TV One series “Hollywood Divas” premiering this fall.
In other news about Knight, the iconic R&B diva has said she would like to see Grammy winner Kelly Rowland play her in a bio film about her life.
In an interview with CBS, Knight shared that she can relate to the former Destiny’s Child member.
“I like Kelly Rowland. We don’t know her as an actress, but there’s something about her and her spirit that kind of reflects with me,” explained Knight.
