She may be 80-years-old, but Dame Judi Dench’s libido has shown no signs of slowing down! Wondering how I know? Well, she’s got a thing for Golden Globe winner Johnny Depp.
AlwaysAList.com flew to London to interview the British-bred thespian about her newest film “The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel” – the sequel to Fox Searchlight’s 2012’s sleeper hit “The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel.”
I probed further: “What’s the magic in Johnny Depp?”
The Oscar winner shot back: “How can you ask that question?” She began to laugh hard, as we set in a suite at the elegant Claridge’s Hotel, and then answered: “I must say its the sex, literally!”
I was left speechless!
That moment captures the essence of “The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel,” a story about retired Brits seeking adventure and discovering love in India’s vibrant Mumbai.
In this second installment, Dench returns as the widowed Evelyn Greenslade, a resident at the Marigold Hotel for the Elderly & Beautiful.
The role of Evelyn “very disconcerting” for the great Dame, as this character is one more like herself than any other she’s ever played.
“The one thing that worried me and was very, very disconcerting for me, was I used to get made up and get into my clothes and they’d say I was ready. I’d look into the mirror and think I don’t know where this person is because all I see is me looking exactly like me wearing clothes I would wear. We tried lots of things. I tried dying my hair, none of it worked. I just looked really ridiculous. I found it very difficult indeed. It wasn’t even easier the second time,” she confessed.
As tough as Dench finds it playing the character that is unnervingly close to her real self, she’d sign on again for a third installment if the second one is as successful as the first.
“Wouldn’t it be heaven? I’m up for that,” Dench said, laughing.
But before than happens, you’ll have to check out the sequel which features all of the original cast members—Dev Patel, Maggie Smith, Bill Nighy, Penelope Wilton, Celia Imrie, Ronald Pickup and Tom Wilkinson. Joining in on the fun this time around is Richard Gere.
Unfortunately for Dench, Gere’s character Guy Chambers wasn’t there to have an affair with her.
“The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel” is as engaging and endearing and Dame Judi Dench herself. The film hits theaters on Friday, March 6.
