Brandy Norwood: Suing Record Label & Returning To “Chicago”

R&B singer Brandy Norwood has filed suit against her record company and its president for blocking her from releasing new music and attempting to force her into signing a new contract.

In legal documents filed last week in Los Angeles Superior Court and first reported by Entertainment Weekly, Brandy alleged that Chameleon Entertainment and company head Breyon Prescott “will not pay for her to record new albums or allow her to otherwise release music to her fans” in “a blatantly unlawful attempt to bully Norwood into signing a new recording and distribution agreement containing terms far worse than her current agreement.”

Chameleon Entertainment released Brandy’s 2012 CD, “Two Eleven,” which was distributed through RCA Records. Apparently, Chameleon Entertainment was supposed to advance some of the recording costs for a follow-up release that would have been her second CD in her five-album deal. Instead, the company delayed her recording it.

The 37-year-old “Have You Ever?” singer also claims that Chameleon Entertainment accused her of failing to cooperate with them and suspended her contract in April 2014.

According to the lawsuit, Prescott then tried to get Brandy to sign a deal with Epic Records, where he is head of A&R, that would give the company a piece of her acting and touring income in addition to her recording income. Ironically, Brandy’s 2008 release “Human” came out on Epic Records under different leadership, but the label and the singer parted ways after lackluster record sales.

Regardless, Brandy is seeking $1 million in compensatory damages.

Neither reps for Brandy, Epic, nor Chameleon have commented on the pending litigation.

In other Brandy news, the star of BET’s “Zoe Ever After” has a new single “Beggin’ & Pleadin'” available online. You can see the McComb, Mississippi-bred talent perform the track on BET’s “Black Girls Rock.”

Brandy will also return to the Broadway production “Chicago” later this month. The singer will resume the role of Roxie Hart in a limited engagement of the musical at the Pantages Theatre in Los Angeles from April 26 to May 1, 2016.
