After more than 30 years in the business, veteran R&B group New Edition is back on the top of the charts courtesy of group member Johnny Gill.
The iconic boy band—made up of Ronnie DeVoe, Ricky Bell, Michael Bivins, Ralph Tresvant and Gill—has the number one single at Urban Adult Contemporary Radio this week with their song “This One’s For Me and You.”
“This One’s For Me and You” is the third single from Gill’s CD, “Game Changer” which was released in 2014 on his own label J Stillz Records and distributed by Caroline Records. The album also featured the singles “Behind Closed Doors” and the title track, “Game Changer.”
This is the first number one single for New Edition since the group’s 1996 record, “Hit Me Off” from their “Home Again” album.
The Boston-bred group that sometimes includes original member Bobby Brown released a single in 2004 called “Hot 2Nite.” The song was featured on their 2004 Bad Boy Records album “One Love,” but drama behind the scenes with label head Sean “Diddy” Combs and the single peaking at number 35 on the charts caused that relationship to be short-lived.
Now, New Edition’s featured collaboration on Gill’s “Game Changer” album has proved timely for quintet. The song’s success comes on the heels of BET announcing the cast that will play the group in an upcoming biopic—Bivins (Bryshere Y. Gray), Bell (Elijah Kelley), Gill (Luke James), Tresvant (Algee Smith), DeVoe (Keith Powers) and Brown (Woody McClain).
In an interview with Rolling Stone about the timing of it all, Gill said: “It was supposed to happen…I truly believe it was fate.”
New Edition is fresh off a two-night headlining show on Tom Joyner’s Fantastic Voyage cruise and have a string of other high-profile shows lined up at Funk Fest Tour (Jacksonville, FL/Atlanta, GA/Birmingham, AL); Hampton Jazz Festival (Hampton, VA); Essence Festival (New Orleans, LA); Cincinnati Music Festival (Cincinnati, OH); Windy City Music Festival (Chicago, IL) and limited tour run with Kenny “Babyface” Edmonds.
In addition to the New Edition dates, the Washington, DC-bred Gill is still performing solo dates. On Joyner’s Fantastic Voyage, the “My, My, My” and “Rub You The Right Way” singer delivered a show that would rival what Charlie Wilson has been doing on the road.
