Actress Audra McDonald may not win a Tony this year, but she may give birth to one.
The six-time Tony Award winner is pregnant with her second child at age 45.
This will be the first child for McDonald and second husband, Will Swenson. McDonald has a daughter, Zoe, from her previous marriage to first husband, bassist Peter Donovan. Swenson, a fellow performer, has two children from his previous marriage.
The former star of the Shonda Rhimes’ drama “Private Practice” is currently starring on Broadway in the musical “Shuffle Along” as 1920’s stage performer Lottie Gee.
She was expected to leave the show temporarily this summer to head to Europe to premiere her acclaimed Broadway show “Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar and Grill” on London’s West End. That role earned McDonald a Tony for her portrait of Billie Holiday.
“Who knew that tap dancing during perimenopause could lead to pregnancy? Will and I are completely surprised—and elated—to be expecting a new addition to our family. I am so very grateful to everyone in New York and London for allowing me to rearrange my schedule to accommodate this little miracle. While I’m disappointed I have to postpone my West End debut in ‘Lady Day,’ I’m glad I’ll be able to spend a little more time in ‘Shuffle Along’ this summer,” McDonald said in a statement.
McDonald will return to “Shuffle Along” this winter after giving birth. “[I] look forward to setting up a 1920s-themed nursery in my dressing room when I return to the show,” she added.
While on maternity leave from “Shuffle Along,” McDonald will be replaced by Grammy winner Rhiannon Giddens, lead singer of the band Carolina Chocolate Drops. Renowned choreographer and tap dancer Savion Glover will also join the production.
