The 11th annual Time 100 has been revealed. According to glossy’s Managing Editor Nancy Gibbs: “The Time 100 is a list of the world’s most influential men and women, not its most powerful.”
This year, Beyoncé graces the cover of the coveted issue, which includes a short explanation written by a famous admirer.
It’s “Lean In” creator Sheryl Sandberg that wrote why the wife of hip-hop mogul Jay-Z is worthy of Time’s top spot.
“Beyoncé doesn’t just sit at the table. She builds a better one,” Sandberg explained. “In the past year, Beyoncé has sold out the Mrs. Carter Show World Tour while being a full-time mother. Her secret: hard work, honesty and authenticity. And her answer to the question, ‘What would you do if you weren’t afraid?’ appears to be ‘Watch me. I’m about to do it.’ Then she adds, ‘You can, too.’”
This year’s Time “Most Influential” list includes a record 41 women.
President Barack Obama is breaks a record by being on the list for the ninth time, more than any other person on the list. The list also features U.S. political figures from both sides of the aisle.
Among the others joining Beyoncé as “Most Influential” include Kerry Washington, Pharrell Williams, Hillary Clinton, United States Attorney General Eric Holder, Serena Williams, “12 Years a Slave” director Steve McQueen, NBA star Jason Collins, United States Secretary of State John Kerry, comedian Jordan Peele, and U.N.’s World Food Programme’s Ertharin Cousin, among others.
The May 5, 2014 issue of TIME goes on sale on Friday, April 25, 2014.
