Whether you grew up on Jet magazine, subscribed to the weekly publication or only read it while in barbershops and hair salons, there’s sadness in learning that after 63 years the magazine will stop publishing its print version.
Johnson Publishing Company, the magazine’s parent company, has announced that starting in June the Chicago-based magazine will only exist in the digital format.
Johnson Publishing claims the move is being done to reach younger African-American readers who prefer getting news and information from online platforms and from their smart phones.
Jet was the third-largest African-American magazine with a circulation of 700,000. It’s best known for celebrity photos, African-American interest stories, black wedding photos and its infamous Beauty of The Week section.
The iconic pint-sized publication was founded by the late John H. Johnson in 1951, just five years after he launched Ebony. Jet played a pivotal part of the Black Civil Rights movement.
His daughter Linda Johnson is the current Chairman of the company. Desiree Rogers, the former White House Social Secretary for President Barack Obama, is the Chief Executive Officer of Johnson Publishing Company.
In late April, it was announced that Jet’s Editor in Chief Mitzi Miller would succeed Amy DuBois Barnett as editor-in-chief for Ebony magazine. Barnett’s departure from the glossy was abrupt raised flags, as the press release used the “effective immediately” to describe the transition.
