They were rumored to have separated back in June and apparently that speculation was true, as Oscar nominee Djimon Hounsou and a fashion mogul Kimora Lee Simmons officially confirm they have broken up.
The rep for the 48-year-old actor confirmed the news to People magazine.
“Djimon Hounsou and Kimora Lee Simmons have officially separated after 5½ years. Though never married, they have one child together, Kenzo Lee Hounsou, who is 3½ years old,” the publicist said.
The star of “Amistad” began dating Simmons in 2007. The two also appeared in the Queen Latifah film “Beauty Shop” in 2005.
In the summer of 2008, Simmons and Hounsou had a traditional Beninese wedding ceremony in Benin, West Africa but did not make their union legal in the United States.
Sources close to the 37-year-old former model believed that she didn’t want to legally wed Hounsou in the U.S. so that she could continue to get spousal support from her ex-husband, entertainment mogul Russell Simmons. Simmons and her ex-husband have two daughters Ming, 12 and Aoki, 10.
Oddly enough, when the New York Daily News broke news in June that the couple had broken up, it was Simmons’ ex-hubby who said, “Kimora and Djimon are fine.”
The hip-hop impresario also declared: “I damn sure don’t pay nor have I ever paid alimony (Kimora does just fine). In no way do I support their lifestyle, so please don’t say they are fighting over MY money.”
Simmons, now the president and creative director for JustFab, spoke about the split via her official Twitter page.
“There have been quite a few hurtful rumors circulating. The truth is Djimon+I have been separated for some time. We have remained happy, loving, co-parenting friends+family. We all have much to be thankful for. #HappyThanksgiving” – the unedited message she posted via @OfficialKimora read.
