Season six “American Idol” Lakisha Jones has been ordered to serve 45 days in jail by a Michigan judge found her in civil contempt for failing to pay for her father’s nursing home bills.
The ruling came down by Genesee County Probate Judge Jennie Barkey on Friday, who has given the fourth runner up “Idol” finalist until January 16 to turn herself in. Jones could avoid doing the jail stint if she ponies up more than $5,000 in back bills along with an additional $2,000 in attorney’s fees.
Judge Barkey found Jones in contempt for not paying Lonnie Jones’ bills.
Jones was not present at the time of the ruling. Her attorney, Christopher J. Ebbott, told the court his client could not attend the hearing on Friday because she was tending her sick children at home.
The 34-year-old singer has two children, an 11-year-old daughter from a previous relationship and a five-year-old daughter with her husband, financial adviser Larry Davis.
Jones released her debut CD, “So Glad I’m Me” back in 2009 on the boutique label Elite Music. She also performed in the Broadway musical “The Color Purple,” where she played the church soloist primarily and performed as Chaka Khan’s understudy for the role of Sofia during matinee showings.
