Media Massacre: Juicy, XXL, SLAM, Rides & Other Magazines Ending

Juicy & XXL

More than a dozen or so magazines just became casualties of the digital era, as Harris Publications abruptly announced it was closing last week.

The latest digital disruption brings an end to urban print titles like Juicy, XXL, SLAM and Rides; as well as Celebrity Hairstyles, Guitar World, Revolver, Who’s Who in Baseball, and Guns & Weapons. Harris previously own King magazine as well, but it sold the struggling male-oriented glossy to Townsquare Media in 2014.

The New York-based magazine publisher had been in business since 1977, but on April 28 in a letter to its staff and partners, Harris Publications revealed it was closing shop.

“It is with great sadness that we are announcing the closing of Harris Publications. For nearly 40 years, Harris Publications has been a mainstay in enthusiast publishing. We are extremely grateful for the tremendous contributions of our employees, past and present. The hard work and dedication of our creative, sales, circulation and operations teams and the talents of our freelance editors, writers, photographers and designers are what allowed us to continue delivering thoughtful and beautiful magazines to our readers,” the company’s statement read.

Harris Publications acknowledged that contending in the digital age had really impacted the company and it just could no longer survive.

Harris Publications“The magazine publishing industry has been through turmoil in the face of the rapid ascendance of digital media, changing consumer content preferences, magazine wholesaler struggles and consolidation in the supply chain. We have tried mightily to persevere against these forces, but have been unable to overcome these challenges,” the continued.

In recent years, other Black-oriented magazines like Sister 2 Sister, Vibe and JET have ceased publishing the print editions of their magazines.Slam & Rides
