The father of R&B superstar Mary J. Blige is in critical condition after being stabbed Thursday morning allegedly by his former girlfriend.
Thomas Blige, who is 63, was stabbed three times – including one to the neck – during a domestic dispute in an apartment in Battle Creek, Mich.
According to the Battle Creek Enquirer, who first reported the story, police say that Mr. Blige’s former girlfriend has been arrested on a charge of assault with intent to murder.
Authorities were called to the Arbors of Battle Creek apartment complex at 6:58 a.m. on Thursday. When they arrived, police found blood in the snow near the entrance drive, Detective Sgt. Jim Martens told USA Today.
Officers then found the victim Mr. Blige in his apartment and the knife that they suspect was used in the attack.
Roommate Michael Thomas told 24 Hour News 8 that Mr. Blige was studying for a college course when they heard a loud hissing sound from outside their apartment. They looked outside to see Blige’s ex-girlfriend slashing the tires of his Ford Explorer.
Mr. Blige went outside to confront her. They argued, and she stabbed him in the neck, police said.
Blige’s father—whom she described as a jazz musician and Vietnam War veteran who suffered from post-traumatic stress syndrome—was taken to Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo, Mich., where he underwent surgery.
Police found the former girlfriend, 50, wearing blood-spattered clothing in her nearby apartment, which is located in the same complex, confirmed Martens.
The girlfriend was taken to the Calhoun County jail and was expected to be arraigned Friday in Calhoun County District Court.
The couple apparently has a volatile relationship in the past. Reportedly, there have been at least seven domestic violence complaints between Blige and his former girlfriend, who reportedly entered a no-contest plea after being charged with aggravated domestic violence against him last October and was sentenced to six months probation.
Blige has been open about her father being abusive to her mother when she was a child. In a previous interview, she stated: “He left us when I was 4, but he’d come back from time to time and abuse her some more.”
In her song, “Father In You,” Blige sang, “When I was a little girl, I didn’t have a father / And that’s why I’m leaning on you.”
The ‘No More Drama’ singer has not commented on the situation.
