Former Turks and Caicos Islands Premier Michael Misick has been locked up in a Brazilian jail since April.
The 47-year-old politician was originally arrested by federal police on Friday, Dec. 7, 2012 while trying to board a domestic flight at the Santos Dumond airport to see his Brazilian attorney. He was released on bail in Feb. 2013 but re-arrested two months later.
Michael is in jail pending the outcome of extradition hearings stemming from an international arrest warrant that was issued by Interpol and an additional warrant issued by Brazilian Supreme Court. The warrants are based on information provided by the TCI Special Investigation and Prosecution Team (SIPT) which is headed by British attorney Helen Garlick, formerly of the UK’s Serious Fraud Office.
Michael is wanted for questioning by SIPT as part of an ongoing investigation into troubles from Sir Robin Auld’s 2008 to 2009 Commission of Inquiry related to alleged corruption and mal-administration, according to Caymen Net News. The former Premier, who was living in Brazil for more than a year prior to his arrest, has never been formally charged with any crimes by SIPT.
Michael’s brother, Phillip Misick, told The Sun that the SIPT and British operatives using propaganda and spreading lies about Michael to keep him arrested. Despite being incarcerated, Phillip said Michael is “in good spirits and mentally sharp” and is not negotiating a plea bargain with British and/or American law enforcement authorities.
A report surfaced on the Caribbean blog the Turks and Caicos Islands Journal claiming that Michael negotiating a plea bargain authorities in Britain and the United States that would implicate some American citizens, as well as senior politicians in Jamaica, Bermuda and the Cayman Islands.
