“Good Morning America” anchor Robin Roberts’ mother, Lucimarian Tolliver Roberts, has died at the age of 88.

The “GMA” anchor had left her ABC morning show on Thursday—a day earlier than her planned medical leave was supposed to begin—to travel to Mississippi to be with her mother.

“Our beloved mother, the matriarch of our family, 88-years-old, has had some health issues recently and it’s got to the point that [my sister] Sally-Ann and I need to get home so I’m leaving a day early,” Roberts revealed during Thursday’s broadcast.

Her mom died that evening.

Roberts’ friend and former “GMA” co-host, ABC’s Diane Sawyer, spoke about Mrs. Roberts on the Friday broadcast.

“Pure magic when she walked into the room … and of course Robin knew … her heavenly instincts always tell her when she needs to be there with her family,” Sawyer said.

Roberts and her mom released a book in March of this year called, “My Story, My Song – Mother-Daughter Reflections on Life and Faith” (Upper Room).

The late Mrs. Roberts was the first African-American to head Mississippi’s Board of Education.
