Wyclef Jean is coming clean about the long rumored affair with his former Fugees member Lauryn Hill his a new autobiography, “Purpose: An Immigrant’s Story” (Harper Collins).
In the tome—out today—the 42-year-old rapper/producer disclosed that it was his affair with Hill and her lying about him being the father of her firstborn child, Zion that caused the group’s demise.
“In that moment something died between us. I was married and Lauryn and I were having an affair, but she led me to believe that the baby was mine, and I couldn’t forgive that,” wrote Jean.
The Haitian-born entertainer, who was married at the time of his affair, said Hill’s deception complicated things and made it impossible for them to work together.
“She could not longer be my muse,” he wrote. “Our love spell was broken.”
Rumors of Jean fathering Hill’s baby had followed The Fugees since the group split in 1997.
The hip-hop trio reunited for a surprise performance on the 2005 BET Awards, which sparked anticipation for a reunion CD and tour from the group. Unfortunately, the award show was the last time they performed together as a collective.
