The cast of the critically acclaimed Broadway revival “The Color Purple” came together to celebrate the release of their anticipated cast soundtrack at a private listening party at The W Hotel Times Square in New York City.
While eating on hors d’oeuvres, sipping on libations and partying to a mix of contemporary songs and soundtrack favorites, the cast of “The Color Purple” mixed and mingled with a who’s who of influencers, media people and Broadway tastemakers in the hip W Hotel lounge.
The musical’s standout characters The Church Ladies (Carrie Compere, Bre Jackson and Rema Webb) hosted the listening party; and the entire leading cast, Cynthia Erivo (Celie), Jennifer Hudson (Shug Avery), Danielle Brooks (Sofia), Isaiah Johnson (Mister), Kyle Scatliffe (Harpo) and Joaquina Kalukango (Nettie) were in attendance.
Also at the soiree was Patrice Covington (Squeak), Lawrence Clayton (Preacher/Ol’ Mister), Grasan Kingsberry (Adam/Buster), Kevyn Morrow (Pa), Antoine L. Smith (Grady), Carla R. Stewart (Olivia), Akron Watson (Bobby), Dwayne Clark (guard) and the show’s swings, Phoenix Best, Adrianna Hicks and Ken Robinson.
The revival of “The Color Purple” opened on The Great White Way at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre on Dec. 10, 2015.
Based on Alice Walker’s Pulitzer Prize winning novel and adapted for the stage by Pulitzer Prize and Tony award winner Marsha Norman, the original music featured in the theatrical interpretation of “The Color Purple” was created by Grammy Award winners Brenda Russell, Allee Willis and Stephen Bray.
The cast soundtrack is produced by six-time Grammy Award winner Frank Filipetti and will be released worldwide on Broadway Records on Feb. 19.
