Common

Oscar and Grammy Award winning superstar Common was in his hometown of Chicago to celebrate the 100th birthday of the National Park Service at Chicago’s Washington Park. The event was part of the National Park Foundation’s Find Your Park movement.

During the event, held in the South Side community of Chicago, the prolific hip-hop star encouraged the community with a message of peace and healing.

“Similar to what Muhammad Ali said – spread love and equality. With all the violence going on, I just want young people to know there is hope and they can overcome that to achieve whatever they want,” the rapper/actor expressed.

The momentous moment also included New Orleans’s Treme Brass Band; the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble (who are featured on Beyoncé’s visual album “Lemonade”); and the Black Men of Labor.

Common, who appeared at The Tony Awards last weekend to introduce the performance of Broadway’s “Hamilton,” regularly returns home to Chicago, as his mother still lives there.
