Photographer Eunique Jones Gibson’s Because of Them We Can campaign afforded her the privilege of ringing the opening bell at the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) in celebration of Black History Month.
Gibson was joined by some children dreamers of Because of Them We Can campaign, as well as some adult members.
The Because of Them We Can campaign was founded by Gibson as a Black History Month initiative while reflecting on the fact that both of her sons were born during President Barack Obama’s election and re-election.
On March 1, 2013, Gibson left her full-time job and worked on the campaign fully, with her desire to share the rich history of African-Americans and the race’s promising future through images that would refute stereotypes and build the esteem of African-American children.
Gibson believed that Black History Month wasn’t enough time to use the power of photography and images to inspire and educate children, so the Because of Them We Can campaign is now a year-long project.
