More than 20 million people watched President Barack Obama’s second inauguration on television Nielsen announced on Wednesday.
A combination of the ratings across 18 different networks, the total viewership for his second inauguration 20.552 million people. CNN was the top-rated cable news network airing the inaugural, and NBC topped the network broadcasts.
While the numbers were down from the 37 million viewers from President Obama’s first inauguration in 2009, it’s not surprising as second inaugurations are not usually as big a draw as the first ones. Nielsen also noted TV viewership is down for all programs.
The ceremony to celebrate President Obama’s second term still easily beat George W. Bush, his immediate predecessor, who drew just 15.5 million viewers for his second inauguration.
