Push Da Button: Jennifer Hudson Headed To Broadway

Jennifer Hudson 2

When AlwaysAList.com sat down with Oscar winner Jennifer Hudson at Bishop T.D. Jakes’ MegaFest conference in 2013 in Dallas, she told us she wasn’t ready to take on the Great White Way.

“That’s a dream of mine, but just let me get a little bit older,” Hudson said at the time.  “I’m always used to moving around and I started out doing theater on a Disney cruise ship and I know what that lifestyle is like. So I’m not ready to be that confined yet, but when I am I will be there with bells on.”

Now, year and a half later, the “Dreamgirls” star, who got a taste of Broadway while starring in a recurring role during season two of NBC’s theater-theme drama “Smash,” is ready for her Broadway debut. It was just announced late last week that Hudson will star in the revival of “The Color Purple” as Shug Avery.

Hudson’s role of Shug Avery landed singer/actress Elisabeth Withers a Tony Award nomination in 2006.  Former Destiny’s Child member Michelle Williams played the character with the signature song ‘Push Da Button’ when the touring cast of the production launched in 2007.

“The Color Purple,” this time helmed by John Doyle, will return to Broadway later this year. Singer/actress Cynthia Erivo, who played the role of Celie in the 2013 run of the production at London’s Menier Chocolate Factory, is in negotiations to reprise the role for the New York revival.

A host of other high-profile stars have appeared in the Broadway and touring versions of “The Color Purple,” including “American Idol” winner Fantasia Barrino, TV actress Renée Elise Goldsberry, Grammy winner Chaka Khan, gospel star BeBe Winans, and “American Idol” finalists LaToya London and LaKisha Jones.

“The Color Purple” musical is produced by Oprah Winfrey and Scott Sanders.  The production, based on the novel by Alice Walker, features all original musical written by Brenda Russell, Allee Willis and Stephen Bray.
