Michelle Williams has been cast as Mary Magdalene in the long-running global musical “Jesus Christ Superstar.”
The Grammy-winning member of Destiny’s Child will hit the road this summer for an arena tour of the acclaimed show.
Williams will tour alongside fellow musicians including N’Sync’s JC Chasez (Pontius Pilate); Incubus lead singer Brandon Boyd (Judas Iscariot); Sex Pistols front man John Rotten Lydon (King Herod) and British newcomer Ben Forster (Jesus), who won England’s ITV Superstar competition in 2012.
“I’m ready to learn from all of them. I mean, who would’ve thought I’d be paired with John Lydon of the Sex Pistols and Brandon Boyd from Incubus and J.C. Chasez from *NSYNC? When girl groups and boy bands collide! As of today, we’ve been working together for the past few days,” the Rockford, Illinois-native told Time magazine about her latest role. “I’m the only female in the principal cast! So I gotta do stuff to make it fun and not too boy-y.”
Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s rock extravaganza began 40 years ago, and this is Williams second time in a Rice production. In 2003, she starred on Broadway in Rice’s hit musical “Aida.”
“Jesus Christ Superstar” kicks off its 54-city tour in New Orleans on June 9. It will also hit cities like Detroit, Los Angeles, Chicago, Washington, DC, Phoenix, Seattle, Las Vegas, Denver, New York City, and Atlanta before ending in Philadelphia on Aug. 16.
