Open Road: “Motown The Musical” Makes Millions On Tour

Missed “Motown The Musical” on Broadway? Well catch the show on the road.

The hit theatrical production is currently playing Hollywood’s Pantages Theatre will celebrate the one-year anniversary of its first national tour on May 8, 2015 after kicking off its tour run in Chicago in 2014.

“Motown The Musical” has had a successful stint as a touring show, having grossed $62.5 million in 52 weeks and playing to more than 875,000 people in 18 different cities. The show has recouped its $8.5 million dollar capitalization cost in less than ten months on the road.

Julius Thomas III

In a limited engagement, Julius Thomas III from the original Broadway cast will rejoin the national tour in the leading role of Berry Gordy.  He’ll play in the production’s Costa Mesa, CA stop at the Segerstrom Center for the Arts.

“Motown The Musical” is the story of the famed record label and the man behind it through the eyes of Gordy himself.  The musical is the journey of the man who went from being a featherweight boxer to the heavyweight music mogul and launched the careers of Diana Ross, Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, Smokey Robinson, Marvin Gaye and so many more.

Directed by Charles Randolph-Wright, this production depicts how the whole Motown family had to fight against the odds to create the soundtrack of change in America.
