Sheryl Lee Ralph: Joins Off-Broadway Production About Sylvester As Producer

TV actress and Broadway star Sheryl Lee Ralph has signed on to become a producer of the off-Broadway production, “Mighty Real: A Fabulous Sylvester Musical.”

Ralph, the original star of Broadway’s “Dreamgirls” and TV shows “Moesha” and “Instant Mom,” joins as producer along with her The D.I.V.A. Foundation to partner with AnthonyKen, LLC on the musical.

“Mighty Real: A Fabulous Sylvester Musical” was written by and stars Anthony Wayne and tells the life story of the late 1970’s disco singer Sylvester. Wayne, who has starred in Broadway shows like “Pippin” and “Priscilla,” focuses on Sylvester’s unapologetic fabulousness and chronicles his life through music.

The show also features Broadway’s Anastacia McCleskey (“Hair”/”Book Of Mormon”) and Jacqueline B. Arnold (“We Will Rock You”/”Priscilla”) as The Two Tons of Fun/The Weather Girls.

Wayne’s life partner, celebrity stylist Kendrell Bowman is the costume designer for the show.

“Mighty Real: A Fabulous Sylvester Musical” has already played sold-out showcases in New York City, Miami and Washington, DC.

The production will start previews for its off-Broadway run on Sept. 5 and officially open on Sept. 12. The limited engagement is slated to run through October at the Theatre at St. Clements.

Sylvester (full name Sylvester James) released 10 studio CDs and one live record during his reign as the “Queen of Disco.”

A gay drag performer, the ‘You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real)’ singer died in 1988 from complications due to AIDS.

In 2011, his story was the subject of an episode of TV One’s “Unsung.”
